Former President Donald Trump’s $180 deal on cryptocurrency continues.
According to Axios, citing “two sources familiar with the matter,” Trump is currently negotiating to speak at the 2024 Bitcoin Conference in Nashville next month.
This marks a dramatic shift for the former president, who was once a critic of cryptocurrency. Reportedly, in May 2018, during his tenure in the Oval Office, he instructed then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “go after Bitcoin (fraud).”
Three years later, Trump stated in an interview that he owned zero cryptocurrency and argued that digital assets were “a disaster waiting to happen.”
However, the former president later changed his stance. Over the past few years, he has gradually warmed to the industry, raising funds for the upcoming election and distinguishing himself from the Biden administration, which some cryptocurrency stakeholders view as hostile to digital assets.
In December 2022, just weeks after formally announcing his intention to run for president in 2024, Trump launched a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Ethereum (ETH)-based platform OpenSea.
In this year’s campaign, the former president has stated that he will “end Joe Biden’s war on crypto” and become “the crypto president.”
His 2024 presidential campaign has also begun accepting cryptocurrency donations, receiving $2 million worth of Bitcoin from Gemini cryptocurrency exchange co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.
The Bitcoin 2024 conference is scheduled to take place from July 25 to 27. The list of speakers includes 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., former Republican primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and renowned whistleblower Edward Snowden, among others.
In May, a jury found Trump guilty of 34 felonies related to falsifying business records ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
