According to new legal documents, the High Court of Justice in the UK is freezing the assets of computer scientist and entrepreneur Craig Wright.
The court responded to a request from podcaster Peter McCormack by issuing a global freezing order, aimed at recovering legal costs incurred by Wright when he sued McCormack for defamation.
McCormack informed his 543,000 followers on social media platform X that the order freezes assets belonging to Wright valued at approximately £1.54 million ($1.9 million), which could aid in the recovery of his legal fees.
Judge James Mellor stated in his ruling, “Wright has used defamation law… to silence anyone who dares to suggest that Dr. Wright is not Satoshi or to question his claims… I am entirely satisfied that Mr. McCormack has a good (indeed a very strong) arguable case to recover £1,548,000 in costs.”
For years, Wright has claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto. However, a judge ruled in March that overwhelming evidence suggests Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, nor the author of the Bitcoin (BTC) white paper, which is the original paper behind the digital asset.
Wright sued podcast host McCormack for defamation after McCormack questioned the computer scientist’s claims of being the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin in the “What Bitcoin Did” podcast, referring to Wright as a “fraudster.”
