Sam Altman’s World Project introduced a new chat feature, World Chat. The company announced the mini app would be accessible on the World App Wallet. The mini-app will help users discern bots from humans.

Sam Altman-backed World Network launched a new chat feature, World Chat, to enable its users to connect with anyone on the network. The company revealed the feature would offer special features to World Network’s digital passport holders.

World introduces chat feature a mini app, World Chat on the World app wallet. World Chat is the latest attempt by Sam Altman’s blockchain project, World, to help users distinguish between bots and human beings. The company revealed that the app was in beta and would feature end-to-end encryption to maintain user privacy.

World Network highlighted the mini app integrated into the project World ID protocol and World App wallet. The company added the feature would allow users to identify whether they are chatting with a verified human being. The new messaging app design was inspired by Apple’s iMessage feature, World noted. Conversations with verified World ID holders would display blue chat bubbles and a unique gem in the upper right corner. Discussions with unverified accounts would show grey bubbles without the gem.

Tiago Sada, head of products at Tools of Humanity, commented that World App had grown significantly over the past year. He added that they had received requests to include a direct messaging feature. Sada noted that a chat feature was more fun and natural for sending funds than entering the wallet to send transactions.

The company said the World Chat mini app would be available on Android and iPhone iOS from March 7. It added that since World Chat was integrated into the World App wallet, users could send and receive crypto to and from anyone worldwide. The project’s team said developers building on the World Network could incorporate World Chat into their mini-app. It explained that users could invite and chat with friends without leaving the World App.

World Network said developers could leverage the protocol’s software development kit to integrate proof of human applications and services. The company revealed that World App has over 24 million users, more than 11 million of whom are verified humans.

World Network introduces Orb 2.0 to improve user privacy. World employees unveiled their plans for “Orb 2.0,” a faster and simpler Orb to scan the irises of billions of people. Rich Heley, the World’s chief designer, revealed they needed more orbs in more places to create an identity verification system. He added that World was opening premium verification experiences at storefronts full of orbs in Mexico City and Buenos Aires. Heley said that they would stage more Orbs in everyday places such as local coffee shops. He suggested that people could soon summon orbs to their homes through an app.

Adrian Ludwig, Chief Architect at Tools for Humanity, mentioned that additional controls would be included in the new Orb to prevent the use of deepfakes. He added that a new feature called World ID Deep Faces would be introduced to allow users to verify that the systems they interact with online are not deepfakes.

Since its launch in 2023, the World Project has faced resistance from various governments. Governments raised concerns over how the company managed and protected personal data. The project was banned in Hong Kong and Spain in 2024 and fined in Argentina for violating local data protection laws.

Damien Kieran, the project’s chief privacy officer, said they did not collect the data to sell it. He added that the project was working with regulators to address regulatory concerns. Kieran added that WorldCoin paused its image-sharing option for users while it developed a new verification process. He said the project training materials did not ask operators to share biometric data.
