Coin World reported:
Peter Todd stated that he was not aware that HBO’s documentary was attempting to uncover the identity of the creator of Bitcoin, but rather delving into the history of cryptocurrency assets.
The documentary director, Karen Hoback, claimed that Todd exaggerated when he said his life was in danger after being named as Satoshi Nakamoto.
Peter Todd, a core developer of Bitcoin, went into hiding due to concerns for his safety, following the release of an HBO documentary that named him as the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
The documentary titled “The Money Code: The Bitcoin Mystery,” directed by Karen Hoback, explores the early days of Bitcoin and some key individuals involved, including Todd and Blockstream founder Adam Back.
In the conclusion of the documentary, when questioned by Hoback, Todd said, “Yes, I am Satoshi Nakamoto.”
Before the release of the documentary, Todd denied being Satoshi Nakamoto.
After the release of the documentary, Todd began posting on social media, once again denying that he is Satoshi Nakamoto.
Someone called him out, writing, “I am not Satoshi Nakamoto.”
No one should help find Satoshi Nakamoto.
In an interview with Wired, Todd stated that he went into hiding after the documentary due to concerns for his safety.
Todd faced harassment, including receiving 25 emails in two days asking for help in repaying loans.
In an email to the publication, Todd said, “It is obvious that falsely claiming ordinary people with ordinary wealth to be extremely wealthy puts them at risk of robbery and kidnapping.”
According to Todd, he did not realize that the documentary was attempting to uncover the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, but rather documented the history of cryptocurrency assets.
Todd added, “This question is not only foolish, but dangerous. Satoshi Nakamoto clearly did not want to be found, and for good reason. No one should assist those trying to find Satoshi Nakamoto.”
In Hoback’s view, Todd exaggerated the situation, as nothing terrible happened to other individuals believed to be Satoshi Nakamoto.
According to Hoback, revealing the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is a matter of public interest and “very important” because this individual “could potentially become the richest person on Earth.”
Hoback believed Todd to be the creator of Bitcoin because he responded to a post by Satoshi Nakamoto on an online forum in 2010. According to Hoback, Todd’s post was a continuation of Nakamoto’s post, which was mistakenly sent from Todd’s account instead of Nakamoto’s account.
