Arkham pointed out in a post this morning that a wallet controlled by the US government appears to have been hacked, transferring $20 million worth of USDC, USDT, aUSDC, and ETH to a suspicious address…
We know that the government with the largest Bitcoin holdings at present is the United States. Between November 2020 and 2022, it seized over 200,000 Bitcoins from cybercriminals and darknet markets. Currently, these Bitcoins are mainly stored in wallets controlled by the Department of Justice, the Internal Revenue Service, or other institutions in the United States.
However, the security of these huge funds seems to have been compromised this morning. According to data analysis platform Arkham’s post at 03:43, a wallet controlled by the US government (0xc9E6…) appears to have been hacked, transferring $20 million worth of USDC, USDT, aUSDC, and ETH to a suspicious address (0x3486…).
Arkham believes:
The funds have been transferred to wallet 0x348, which has started selling the funds for ETH. We believe that the attackers have begun to launder the funds through suspicious addresses related to money laundering services.
According to on-chain data, after receiving over $20 million in assets, the wallet suspected to belong to the attacker quickly made transfers again. Currently, most of the assets are stored in over 13 million USDC in Aave.
Is the government vulnerable?
As of the deadline, the US government has not yet responded to this matter, but it has sparked heated discussions within the community. After all, the confiscated cryptocurrency assets of the US government are not a small amount. If there is indeed a security vulnerability, the impact should not be underestimated.
On the other hand, the community is also surprised by the audacious actions of the hacker. After all, they are openly challenging one of the most influential political powers on Earth. If it is indeed an attack, the US government is expected to mobilize all its resources to pursue and apprehend the perpetrator.
