People Can Fly, and Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on March 13 a new partnership to produce a prototype of a new game based on an IP owned by PlayStation. The Poland-headquartered studio will work as a developer on behalf of PlayStation, which will be the publisher. The studio also said it would receive an agreed-upon remuneration from PlayStation. People Can Fly also stated that it would divide the prototype into stages.

People Can Fly partners with Sony Interactive Entertainment

Outriders and Gears of War Judgment studio People Can Fly (PCF) revealed it entered into a work-for-hire agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The studio said that the collaboration requires both parties to create a prototype based on an unknown IP owned by PlayStation. PCF also noted that it will receive the agreed remuneration from the Publisher as the project developer. The Bulletstorm developer highlighted that work on the Product will be divided into stages in accordance with the Production Agreement. The report also noted that the detailed terms of cooperation between the parties regarding achieving and payment for subsequent milestones are scheduled in the Production Agreement.

The studio revealed that the upcoming release is codenamed Project Delta, despite further details about the prototype remaining slim at the moment. People Can Fly said Project Delta will be based on a franchise in which Sony holds intellectual property rights. PCF said that the conclusion of the Production Agreement was in line with its update of the company’s Strategy. The studio announced on 31 January that it will take full advantage of any commercially attractive opportunities for cooperation with reputable partners in the work-for-hire model.

PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst highlighted that Sony was open to reviving its back catalogue of classic game franchises. He told Famitsu that moving forward, the firm intended to offer a broad range of experiences from both its first-party studios and through working with external developers. Hulst mentioned that as part of its efforts to strengthen its portfolio, the firm was looking at opportunities to leverage past IP “as well as develop new franchises.” He also added that the company’s goal was “to publish games by the world’s best creators, both inside and outside of PlayStation, and we have achieved many successes so far by working closely with external development studios.”

People Can Fly suspends projects and suffers layoffs

The game developer signed a similar regulatory filing with Microsoft in 2023 to develop a new project based on one of the Xbox maker’s IPs. The firm said the game was codenamed Project Maverick and would be fully funded by Microsoft with a budget of $30M to $50M.

People Can Fly also revealed in April last year that it had cancelled a co-op action RPG codenamed Project Dagger. Take-Two announced in September 2022 that it had pulled out of the deal and left PCF to continue developing the game for self-publishing. The studio has also suffered a number of layoffs after announcing in December its second round of layoffs in less than a year. People Can Fly CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski wrote that the company was parting ways with “more than 120 talented Aviators.” He said that the firm had suspended Project Victoria, scaled down its team on Project Bifrost and restructured some of its supporting teams. Wojciechowski blamed “external market pressures” that persisted beyond their forecasts.

People Can Fly was also revealed as co-developer of Gears of War: E-Day alongside The Coalition. Wojciechowski referred to the collaboration as a “privilege and an exciting opportunity to build upon the intense, visceral action and rich storytelling that fans have come to love.”
