The Coin World reports:
A bipartisan group of 18 state attorneys general in the United States has called on President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to take action to ensure the release of Teagan Gambaryan, Binance’s compliance officer, from prison in Nigeria.
Gambaryan, a former special agent with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), was arrested in Nigeria in February while visiting the country to address regulatory concerns about Binance. He faces charges of money laundering and operating an unlicensed financial institution.
In August, reports emerged that Gambaryan’s physical and mental health had deteriorated. It is alleged that the Nigerian government has refused to provide him with adequate medical care or basic treatment.
In their joint letter, the attorneys general request that Gambaryan be designated as a hostage under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act, stating that the Nigerian government has illegally detained the Binance executive in a situation that could endanger his life.
“This designation would unlock critical resources and apply additional diplomatic pressure to secure his immediate release. The Levinson Act was specifically designed for cases like this, where US citizens are unlawfully detained due to political or financial leverage,” they said.
They argue that the United States should use all available tools to protect one of its most dedicated law enforcement officers who played a role in combating child pornography rings Welcome to Video and dark web markets AlphaBay and Silk Road.
“This blatant abuse of power is nothing short of extortion, and the US government must act decisively, especially considering the financial and political support the United States provides to the current Nigerian regime.”
