According to CoinWorld, the team behind the Ethereum gaming platform Immutable has accused the company of “embarrassing behavior” and covering up a security incident after issuing several warnings regarding phishing links on Discord.
Earlier on Monday, cryptocurrency detective ZachXBT pointed out via X (formerly Twitter) that the Immutable Discord server had been briefly “compromised” over the weekend. He then claimed that Immutable had issued “zero announcements” on its official channels, warning that “it looks like you’re trying to cover up a security incident…”
However, Immutable asserts that an internal employee warned about the malicious links on the Discord channel two hours after the incident occurred. Immutable’s response was directed at ZachXBT’s claims.
In response to ZachXBT, the issue appears to be that the disclosure happened only after the situation was contained, potentially putting users at risk for a short period. Immutable claims that a community support contractor’s Discord account was “compromised” on Saturday before the phishing links were shared. However, the only warning issued via X came from another cryptocurrency gaming studio, Illuvium.
Screenshots shared in a post by ZachXBT show a user questioning why Immutable was reluctant to issue a Discord announcement despite the hack. Other users reported that hackers shared malicious links that appeared to come from Discord moderators, claiming their cryptocurrencies were stolen after falling victim to these links, saying, “I got scammed.”
In August of last year, at least five cryptocurrency companies’ Discord channels were hacked within a week. Officials from Witness Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, Zksync, and Orderly Network alerted users about ongoing hacking attempts through at least one official channel.
Protos has reached out to Immutable for comment, and we will update if we receive a response.
